The human sense of smell can be pretty powerful thing. Just think about it: a slight whiff of something can trigger a powerful memory. The smell of lavender can remind you of a summer day out in the garden with your mother. Old Spice can trigger a fond memory of your grandfather… Fragrances are powerful, but sometimes they can be misplaced – like at work.
What may smell sweet and wonderful to you may cause another person to wrinkle up their nose. Not so much because of the smell but for other reasons, like allergies. According to a study done by the University of West Georgia, as many as 30 percent of the people surveyed said they found scented products irritating. Once again, their irritation didn’t have so much to do with the smell, but with the affect the scented products had on their skin. Those with asthma or chemical sensitivities can find strong scents particularly problematic due to allergy-like symptoms. It’s because of these allergies and sensitivities that many companies include in their dress code: No perfume or cologne!
